20 Dental Hygienist terms

Hi everyone, I'm Laurie, I am 19 years old, and I want to be a dental hygienist. I will enter the dental hygienist technique program next semester. This career is basically the person who will provide an oral care to patients by cleaning their teeth and more. This glossary is for everyone who is interested in this career or future dental hygienist like me. In this field there are a lot of specific terms that are sometimes really difficult to retain. Especially, with all the term of health problem or tool or name of the tooth that you can be dealing with in this field. In this glossary they will be 20 terms with their definition that can help others to retain all the information.

abscess
noun
A dental abscess is a build-up of pus in the teeth or gums caused by an infection. It needs urgent treatment by a dentist.
Example: It is necessary to lubricate the area with an abscess every two hours with soda, and in the intervals - rinse the mouth with a soda solution.

bruxism
noun
involuntary habitual grinding of the teeth, typically during sleep.
Example: A person can therefore suffer from bruxism without making any noise.

Cavity
noun
A cavity is a pit or hole in a tooth caused by the decay of the enamel and bone, such as you might get if you don't brush your teeth regularly.
Example: It can prevent the cavity from affecting the tooth any further.

Dental mirror
noun
Mouth mirrors are also called dental mirrors or stomatoscopes. They are used to examine the oral cavity and the patient's teeth.
Example: A dental mirror and suction may still be needed to control the tongue.

Dental sealant

Dental sealants are thin coatings that when painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars) can prevent cavities (tooth decay) for many years.
Example: That is why the dentist seals recommends flattening of the occlusal surface using dental sealant for some patients.

Gingivitis
noun
Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness and swelling (inflammation) of your gingiva, the part of your gum around the base of your teeth.
Example: Some of the most common clinical signs of infection are: Oral infections - Such as GINGIVITIS and stomatitis, both very painful inflammations of the gums and mouth and due to an under-active immune systems.

Gum graft

A gum graft is a dental procedure designed to help people that are dealing with gum recession or to improve their smile by creating a better tooth to gum ratio. A gum graft could be medically necessary if the gums start to pull away from the teeth over time and begin to recede.
Example: If recessions are very advanced, a gum graft can cover the exposed roots.

a narrow-edged tooth at the front of the mouth, adapted for cutting. In humans there are four incisors in each jaw.
Example: Carnivores, like herbivores have a front row of incisor teeth that are generally used for nibbling.

A dental onlay is a restoration that is often used to repair damaged or decayed teeth. Onlays offer a strong and long-lasting reparative solution to tooth decay or similar damage.
Example: An onlay can cover a larger area of the tooth.

Pulp
noun
The pulp is a mass of connective tissue that resides within the center of the tooth, directly beneath the layer of dentin.
Example: Root canal treatment consists of removing the inflamed or infected pulp.

One of the four equal sections into which the dental arches can be divided; begins at the midline of the arch and extends distally to the last tooth.
Example: The patient is often unable to identify the offending tooth or quadrant involved, and may report a history of numerous dental procedures with unsatisfactory results.
